Yesterday, I had the pleasure of assisting at the Huntington Beach Dumpsters on Parade event. This event is put on by the Huntington Beach Public Art Alliance in order to help beautify the HB downtown area. They selected 30 local artists from a list of submissions to paint 30 dumpsters which are visible from public areas. They provided up to $200 reimbursement to the artists for their painting supplies and grand prize of $2500 to the juried contest winner.
The artists pushed their dumpsters down Huntington Beach's Main street at 10 a.m. to the pleasure of all in attendance. After the procession, each artist had a booth on Main street in which they could sell their artwork. This was a big win for the local community and the local artists. I hope to see more community events supporting the arts in the near future. If this interests you, please contact your local city counsel and suggest doing a similar event in your city.
